An ex-cop and assistant professor advocates flogging as a voluntary alternative to prison incarceration. I have to say, I’m tempted by this idea. Prisons seem like pretty much hellish places that are bound to do more harm than good, not to mention the cruelty of denying a person years of their life, an art the US seems to have perfected. On the other hand, if we actually pursued rehabilitation and general policy that prevents the need for crime in the first place like other countries, we wouldn’t have to chose between the lesser of two evils
